{"id":385,"date":"2023-12-06T12:46:02","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T12:46:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gardapis.co.uk\/?page_id=385"},"modified":"2023-12-06T12:46:42","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T12:46:42","slug":"zero-bycatch-how-to-use-the-red-orange-nozzles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.gardapis.co.uk\/index.php\/zero-bycatch-how-to-use-the-red-orange-nozzles\/","title":{"rendered":"Zero-bycatch :  How to use the red &#038; orange nozzles"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>HOW TO USE THE RED &amp; ORANGE NOZZLES<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Each Gard\u2019Apis kit comes with red and orange\/yellow-coloured\u00a0nozzles that fit to the cones.\u00a0 These are\u00a0designed to all but eliminate bycatch.<\/p>\n<p>The red nozzles are intended to allow the entry of queen asian\u00a0hornets and so should be used from early spring to early summer and again in\u00a0autumn.<\/p>\n<p>In spring the queens emerge from hibernation and build a\u00a0small nest to raise the first batch of workers themselves, therefore\u00a0every queen killed at this point will lessen the number of nests that go onto\u00a0full hornet production.\u00a0 At this point\u00a0the queens are looking for both protein for the larvae and carbohydrates for\u00a0themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Queen European hornets are also about and the discrimination\u00a0brought by the use of the red nozzle will prevent these from entering the trap.<\/p>\n<p>Other, smaller insects that enter the trap through the mesh\u00a0are free to come and go.<\/p>\n<p>Once the primary nest is complete the queen and her workers\u00a0leave this to go and set up the secondary nest.\u00a0\u00a0She will not leave this to forage herself and all food collection is now\u00a0undertaken by the worker hornets \u2013 and they are smaller than the queen.\u00a0 This is the time to move to the orange nozzle\u00a0to prevent the entry of worker European hornets.<\/p>\n<p>This changeover typically occurs <strong>late spring to early summer<\/strong>\u00a0but is weather dependant.<\/p>\n<p>In the late autumn the hornet nest, before dying off for the\u00a0winter will produce queens for the following year \u2013 often up to 300!<\/p>\n<p>Selective trapping at this time is paramount and is the best\u00a0way of lessening the hornet impact.\u00a0 The\u00a0queens will be looking to take on carbohydrates into their fat reserves, as\u00a0will the European queens, so now it is time to get <strong>the red nozzles back on<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Some by-catch may occur particularly around the time of\u00a0changing from red to orange to red nozzles, but if the trap is carefully\u00a0monitored this may be easily dealt with \u2013 see our instructions on emptying the\u00a0Gard\u2019Apis trap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOW TO USE THE RED &amp; ORANGE NOZZLES &nbsp; Each Gard\u2019Apis kit comes with red and orange\/yellow-coloured\u00a0nozzles that fit to the cones.\u00a0 These are\u00a0designed to all but eliminate bycatch.
